5th Edition International Prize For Picture BOOKS

The Edelvives Publishing Group, which for many years has been committed to selecting and publishing high-quality picture books, hereby announces the 5th Edelvives International Picture Book Award. The aim of this award is to encourage authors and illustrators to submit proposals for publishing projects that contribute new ideas and enable Edelvives to continue to develop its line in innovative ways.

1-The 5th Edelvives International Picture Book Award is open to all writers and illustrators of any nationality who submit projects in Spanish, English, French, or any of the official languages of Spain.

2-Works must fall under the heading of picture book, meaning a book in which the story is told through images and text, each complementing the other.

3-The prize will be awarded to the best publishing project for a picture book, rather than a finished work.

4-The prize will be worth 9,000 euros. This prize money shall be considered part of the author’s royalties as stipulated in the contracts for the Spanish edition as well as for editions in other official languages of Spain, in the event that the book is also published in other languages. The prize money will be paid when the authors deliver the finished work for printing. This award is to be divided between the illustrator and author, with a 70/30 split.

5-The jury will award the prize based on factors such as best proposal or original idea for a project, best text, best illustrations, best proposed setting, best storyboard, and best flyleaf proposal.

6-The proposed picture book may be of any size as long as it is no smaller than 21x18.5 cm and no larger than 30x39 cm.

7-The length of the project must be 32 pages (flyleaves included)

8-The subject of the text submitted is at the author's discretion. The length should be no more than 6,000 character/matrices.

9-Participants must submit a document in which they describe as well as possible what the project consists of. In addition to the text of the book, participants must send the storyboard, three completely finished illustrations (proofs rather than originals) shorwing the main character in different settings, and a proposal for the flyleaves. If a participant wishes to suggest any special finish or technical specifications for the final edition of the project in the event that he or she is the winner, this may be indicated in the project description. However, this will not be taken into account by the jury in making their decision.

10-All personal information is to be submitted in a sealed envelope, containing the author’s or authors’ name(s),address, telephone number and email address. A brief biographical summary for the participants should also be included. In addition to the sealed envelope, two paper copies must be submitted, containing the following information: project description, original text, storyboard and colour copies of the illustrations, as well as the proposal for the flyleaves. The jury will proceed to open the winner's sealed envelope once their decision has been made.

11-The prize includes the editing of the project by Edelvives and its subsequent publication no more than eight months after the jury announces its decision. To this end, Edelvives’s editing and design teams will work with the winner or winners on editing the work. The author or authors shall undertake to collaborate with Edelvives’s professional teams to complete the project by the specified periods and guarantee that Edelvives editorial guidelines are followed.

12-Participants who enter the contest must be of legal age. They may submit a maximum of two projects, but must guarantee that the projects are original and unpublished and are not being submitted to any other publisher for consideration at the same time. Once submitted, projects may not be withdrawn for the duration of the contest.

13-Original works will be accepted starting from the date these rules are published until December 18th, 2015.

14-The jury will be appointed by Edelvives. It will be made up of specialists from different fields of art and culture.

15-The jury’s decision is final and the prize may not necessarily be awarded.

16-The winning project will be publicly announced during the first two weeks of March 2016.

17-Once the jury's decision has been made public, Edelvives will sign a contract with the winner or winners with the same terms and conditions as those established for publisher's line of picture books. Edelvives reserves the worldwide publishing rights to the project, in all languages, and will have the right of first refusal to market it in digital form.

18-The winning authors will participate in promoting the book. The original illustrations may be exhibited and all images created for the book may be reproduced for promotional purposes.

19-Edelvives reserves the right to open the sealed envelopes for any original ideas that it considers to be of interest for publication, once the jury’s decision has been made public. During the month of April, Edelvives will only contact the authors of the works in which it is interested. The rest of projects will be destroyed.

20-Authors must not send original copies of the illustrations. Should they do so, the publisher does not guarantee that they will be returned.

21-Edelvives is under no obligation to communicate by mail or telephone regarding non-winning entries, nor regarding the interpretation and application of these rules.

22- The act of submitting a project to this competition implies acceptance of these rules.
